EST comes up as a direct result of the swift progress in science and technology. In 1979, SIME enrolled its first batch of students majoring in EST. In the present article, the author introduces the syllabus and teaching aims of SIME's EST speciality, treating of the current scene of EST teaching in China as well as the difference between EST and GE. Finally, the author ventures an opinion of what will happen to EST teaching in the predictable future.
