Abstract:English modal verbs of obligation and necessity must, have to, should, ought to, and of English have difficulty with these modal verbs and may use them in improper ways and situations. Researchers indicate that the reason why English modal verbs can be difficult for non-native speakers of English is that they often translate modal verbs from their own lan-guage into English without considering different contextual implications of these modals. In order to find whether and how different by students from Asia were compared with essays on similar topicswritten by American students. And the study results indicate that oriental cultural values do have influence on the use of English modal verbs.
