Abstract:Experiments to study clear water scour around different blunts (circular pier, sub-merged rectangle, sluice pier etc) were conducted in two flumes. On the basis of obtained experi-mental materials, the fluid velocity fields and the fluid vortex fields as well as the relationship between the scour and the scour and the vortex structure are analyzed in detail. Horseshoe vortices and wake vortices are generated while water passes a blunt, and loss of fluid velocity and complicated movement of vortices exist in wake region. The experiments show clearly that the local lo-cal scour around blunts is mainly caused by horseshoe vortices near blunts, vortices near the blunts pick up sediment on the bed, solid particles(sediment)are drawn into the vortex struc-tures, solid particles drawn into the vortex structures, controlled by vortices, move away the definite interrelated structure exists between the movement of particles and the fluid vortices in liquid-particle two-phase flow.
