In order to prolong the lifetime of wireless sensor network (WSN) and improve the energy efficiency,a double cluster head routing protocol based on node scheduling method (DHCNS) for WSN was proposed by combining the techniques of cluster and node scheduling. In the algorithm the node scheduling was used to reduce the number of active nodes before clustering. The master and vice cluster head were selected according to both on node energy and distance to base station and the redundant nodes were selected as the vice cluster head in priority. The master cluster head was used for collecting and integrating data. The vice cluster head was in charge of transporting data to base station. The simulation results show that DHCNS can effectively reduce energy consumption, balance the energy of nodes, and prolong the network lifetime.
